About the performance

THE PERFORMANCE IS 1 HOUR AND 40 MINUTES LONG AND HAS NO INTERVAL.

"And you will give the crown from your head, the sceptre from your hand!"

The story of ruthless will for political and economic power is, it seems, permanently present in the Slovenian history. This is why Slovenian theatre continues to return to this play by Cankar, and many a performance has shown our changing attitude to power. Eduard Miler and ŽaninaMirčevska have, in recent seasons, prepared several fresh takes of classical texts; the concept of this version of The King of Betajnova thus brings a new, perhaps even slightly unexpected perspective of ladder-climbing without any morals. Jožef Kantor becomes what he is primarily because everyone, including the victims, complies with the system in which one can climb over all the others.

"No, Cankar wasn’t a prophet. But he was a bloody good clinician … If the artist rose from the grave and saw St Florian’s Valley of today, he’d see that everything is as it’s always been."
(Andraž Gombač, Primorske novice)
